Cabinet painting has become more popular over the last 20 years and is a great alternative to the high cost of installing new cabinets.
Preparation is key. We start by degreasing all surfaces, using #1-3 steel wool or various courses of wet sandpaper with lacquer thinner followed be a rinse of TSP allow to dry. We then apply a generous coat of shellac primer using natural China bristle and sponge brush allow that to dry 24 hours. We do repairs if needed and then apply urethanized elastomeric caulk to all panels and joints.
We prefer waterborne alkyd paints for finish coats simply because you can double coat in 1 day if time allows and though there is still a 30-day curing period. Waterborne products will not yellow like a traditional oil paint, are extremely durable and will not leave you with an odor headache. you can lightly handle surfaces the same day.
We complete our cabinet work with new door bumpers and if handles are requested, we measure and drill pilot holes after primer is applied and install new handles after painting is completed. Depending on the size and number of cabinets, projects typically range 2-4 visits. You may carefully use the work areas during the process, however painting projects in empty homes may be finished more efficiently.
Careful handling is a must after paintwork is complete. When painting cabinets in a bath and shower room with minimal ventilation or cabinets adjacent to stoves and dishwashers, we will give you a list of instructions to follow to prevent premature paint failure.
